File size per hour by resolution

H.264 at our recommended bitrate for medium-motion content, video only. HEVC is about 30% smaller and AV1 about 40% smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate video file size?

Add the video and audio bitrates, multiply by the length in seconds, and divide by 8 to get bytes. A 10-minute video at 8 Mbps with 192 kbps audio is (8,000,000 + 192,000) × 600 ÷ 8 = 614.4 MB.

Does resolution change the file size?

Only through the bitrate. At the same bitrate, a 4K and a 1080p file are the same size; the 4K one just looks worse per pixel. Higher resolutions need a higher bitrate to look good, which is why they end up bigger.

How much space does container overhead take?

MP4 and MKV usually add well under 1%. We default to 0.5% so estimates err slightly high.
