Bits and bytes

Internet providers and speed tests measure in bits per second (Mbps). Browsers, cloud drives and file managers show bytes per second (MB/s). One byte is 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s: a 40 Mbps upload moves 5 MB every second.

Upload time

Time = file size × 8 ÷ speed. A 4 GB file at 20 Mbps takes 4,000,000,000 × 8 ÷ 20,000,000 = 1,600 seconds, about 27 minutes. Real transfers usually run around 10% slower than the line rate, so the table shows both.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Divide by 8. Internet speeds are in megabits per second (Mbps) and file transfers in megabytes per second (MB/s); a byte is 8 bits, so 20 Mbps is 2.5 MB/s.

How long does it take to upload 1 GB?

At 10 Mbps, about 13 minutes 20 seconds; at 50 Mbps, about 2 minutes 40 seconds; at 100 Mbps, 80 seconds. Real uploads are usually around 10% slower than the line rate.

Why is my upload slower than my speed test?

Speed tests measure bursts to a nearby server. Real uploads lose some speed to protocol overhead, the remote server’s limits, Wi-Fi and other devices on your network.

What is the difference between MB/s and MiB/s?

MB/s uses decimal megabytes (1,000,000 bytes); MiB/s uses binary mebibytes (1,048,576 bytes). Windows and some download managers show MiB/s but label it MB/s.

What upload speed do I need to stream?

Your stream should use no more than about 75% of your upload. A 6,000 kbps Twitch stream plus 160 kbps audio needs about 8.2 Mbps; 1080p60 on YouTube at 12 Mbps needs about 16 Mbps.
